Under den kolde krig stod Langelandsfortet for overvågningen af den vestlige Østersø, og fortets øverstbefalende havde den militære kommando i området. Fortet blev opført i 1953 og nedlagdes i 1993. I dag er hele fortet en afdeling af Langelands Museum.

Zeppelin- & Garnisons Museum Tønder blev indviet d. 8. maj 1999 og ligger i umiddelbar nærhed af det gamle base område. Museet rummer en stor samling af fotografier og genstande fra perioden. Bl.a. originale propeller fra de gigantiske luftskibe, samt uniformer og våben. Museets formål er at indsamle, bevare, udstille og formidle den militære historie i Tønder fra 1914 til 2002.

Featured at the Museum is a state-of-the-art 24 lane indoor gun range and is open to the public six days a week. The Memorial lists over 8,000 officers who were killed in the line of duty. Their names are permanently etched on the Memorial’s marble walls, which are added to once a year for Police Memorial Day.
